Scott E. Gillilan

Gillilan Associates, Inc (GAI) is owned by Scott Gillilan, a restoration hydrologist and conservationist who has been a leader in the field for 30 years. Typical projects include those focusing on hydrologic resiliency, aquatic and wetland restoration and innovative approaches to land conservation. His work in this field includes most of the US with an emphasis on the Mountain West. He is also active in the Bahamas where he helped plan, develop, fund and invest in an ecotourism business intended to become a model for indigenous for-profit conservation businesses throughout the Caribbean.

Philosophy Keystones

Collaboration

Scott was professionally trained in and continues to advocate for multi-disciplinary collaboration on all projects.  For example, most aquatic restoration projects require deep and applied knowledge in the fields of fluvial geomorphology, terrestrial and aquatic ecology, botany, wetlands, hydrology, engineering and technical bioengineering construction practices.  Since no one individual can be an expert in all of these fields, GAI regularly assembles teams of experts and collaborators to match very specific project needs.

Innovation

The restoration and conservation sciences are realistically in their infancy with respect to achieving consistent and sustainable project successes .  While science guides the process success also relies upon real-world practical experience and constant innovation.  While many practitioners in the field “stopped learning” early in their careers, GAI believes every project is the next opportunity to innovate.  This work is challenging and difficult – Mother Nature does not rest and bats last – and requires a healthy dose of humility, art and curiosity.  Every project has unique challenges.

Design | Build

Scott learned early in his career that design-build projects are by far the most successful and cost-efficient project type and GAI almost exclusively operates in the space where restoration design hits the ground.  He does not believe it is possible to create successful designs without having deep and hands-on construction experience.

Recent Collaborators

Heavy Equipment Contractors

Kelly Rowe | Kelly Rowe Rowe Excavation

Dillon, MT

“I‘ve worked with Kelly and Rowe Excavation for decades and including my Day One in 1990 where we both were left on an island tackling a project ‘over our heads’ but then nailed it to our satisfaction. Kelly and his staff still hold the flame of collaborative aquatic restoration excellence.”

Flywater

Colorado

“The crew at FlyWater are top shelf aquatic excavation specialists.  I’ve had the opportunity build 3 projects with them and in South Park, CO over the last 2 years and really appreciate their skills and knowledge on and off the equipment.  Fantastic collaborators who are fast, professional and good value.”

Natural Resource and Conservation Consulting and Collaboration

Karin Boyd | Applied Geomorphology, Inc.

Bozeman, MT

“Simply the best applied fluvial geomorphologist in the Western US and that is not up for debate.  Karin and I share 20 years of collaboration and continue to push each other on all things nuanced in our field.”

Mark Beardsley | EcoMetrics

Buena Vista, CO

“Mark and his EcoMetrics team are the savviest and technical on-the-ground fluvial data scientists I know.  Their hallmark is the long view – how did the measured pre-existing condition channel respond to the restoration “intervention” and did that work out?”

Nathan Korb | The Nature Conservancy

Helena, MT

“I’ve collaborated with Nathan and TNC for well over a decade.  Our collaboration is born on our mutual desire to continue pushing the aquatic restoration envelope and anticipating where the field can become more innovative in the pressing conversation regarding climate change adaptation and hydrologic resiliency”.

Robert Keith | Beartooth Group

Bozeman, MT

“I’ve worked with Robert for a decade as his team pioneered private land investment-based conservation in the Western US.  Our collaboration has been broad – from property acquisition to assessing and then adding value to acquired assets through restoration.  Our businesses continue to grow with each other in tempo to changing land conservation opportunities.”

Carl Palmer and Court Smith | LegacyWorks

Santa Barbara, CA

“I’ve worked closely with Carl and Court for over a decade.  Our shared vision is private land conservation and management.  Besides project collaboration we rely on each other to keep challenging ourselves to do this work with ever more creativity and passion.”

Robert Dunn and Laura Smith | Westscape Wholesale Nursery

Belgrade, MT

“Westcape Nursery is a rare hybrid of native plant nursery, consulting and research science.”

Briana Schultz | Sundog Ecological

Bozeman, MT

“I’ve worked with Briana as both an employee and consultant for over a decade.  I regularly engage her now as a wetland, stream and riparian restoration scientist on the majority of my projects.”

Lyn Bacon | TerraQuatic, LLC

Bozeman, MT

“Lyn is one of my go-to oracles with all things related to wetlands and particularly as one of the few people in the field who fully understands the shifting wetland regulatory environment.  Our collaboration has been ongoing for two decades.”

Gallatin Valley Land Trust

Bozeman, MT

“GVLT hired Gillilan Associates in 2018-19 to design, permit and build a demonstration project on land owned by Gallatin Valley Botanical farms.  The project demonstrated several different floodplain and channel restoration techniques that are translatable to future projects in the Gallatin headwaters.  Their overall conservation work in the Gallatin Valley has been a phenomenal success story.”

Engineering

Allied Engineering

Bozeman, MT

“I regularly utilize Allied Engineering for project surveying, engineering and restoration design.  It is a full-service one-stop shop known for high quality engineering.”.

Pat Redmond | Earth Stabilization LLC

Bozeman, MT

“Pat and I began our restoration careers together working in the same office and our collaboration has lasted almost 3 decades.  He is recognized as a leader in geotechnical and groundwater engineering.”

Colorado Open Lands

Colorado

“I’ve had the pleasure working with Colorado Open Lands for over 10 years with their aquatic conservation and restoration projects.  They’ve embraced forward thinking restoration efforts that include making CO’s headwater streams more resilient to drought and floods and are highly effective securing grants and land owner commitments for this work.”

Other Greats

Montana Aquatic Resources

MARS

MARS is a non-profit organization pioneering regional in-lieu fee wetland mitigation banking.  Non-profit in-lieu fee wetland mitigation banking has been a pipe dream of many of us conservation professionals for decades.  MARS has the fire-power and resources to continue pioneering this value-added land conservation model.

Western Water Project Montana

Montana Office

“I regularly reach out to Trout Unlimited’ s Western Water Project Montana office when I am working with private landowners interested in water conservation and managing water rights that include the value of these as instream flow as well as agricultural benefit.  Their legal staff is amazing – their knowledge of water law and how that interfaces with conservation efforts is unparalleled.”

Chris Boyer

Kestrel Aerial Services

Chris has distinguished himself first as an aquatic resources consultant and for the last many years as an aerial photographer and mapper for a variety of clients including NGO’s, consultants, engineers and conservation interests.  Besides the technical photography he is also well known for raising aerial photography to an art form.
